Structure
Coxsackieviruses are non-enveloped, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA viruses belonging to the genus Enterovirus within the family Picornaviridae. The viruses possess an icosahedral capsid that protects the viral RNA genome and contributes to environmental stability. Coxsackieviruses are divided into Group A and Group B based on their pathogenic properties and biological characteristics. These viruses are transmitted primarily through the fecal-oral route, respiratory secretions, and direct contact with contaminated surfaces. Following infection, viral replication typically occurs in the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts before dissemination to other tissues. Coxsackieviruses are distributed worldwide and are a common cause of childhood and adult infections, with outbreaks occurring periodically in communities, schools, and daycare settings.

Diagnosis
The diagnosis of Coxsackievirus infection is performed through molecular, virological, and serological methods. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) is the preferred diagnostic technique for detecting viral RNA in throat swabs, stool samples, cerebrospinal fluid, blood, and tissue specimens due to its high sensitivity and specificity. Group B coxsackieviruses are frequently associated with pleurodynia, myocarditis, pericarditis, and viral meningitis. Additional symptoms may include headache, fatigue, muscle aches, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and rash. While most infections are self-limiting and resolve without complications, severe disease can occur in neonates, immunocompromised individuals, and patients with cardiac involvement, potentially resulting in life-threatening complications.
