Description

Structure
Chlamydia abortus is an obligate intracellular Gram-negative bacterium belonging to the family Chlamydiaceae. Like other members of the genus Chlamydia, it possesses a unique biphasic developmental cycle consisting of infectious elementary bodies (EBs) and metabolically active reticulate bodies (RBs). The organism primarily infects domestic ruminants, particularly sheep and goats, where it is a major cause of enzootic abortion and reproductive failure. Chlamydia abortus replicates within membrane-bound intracellular inclusions and exhibits a marked tropism for placental tissues. Infected animals may shed large numbers of organisms in placental material, fetal tissues, and reproductive secretions. Human infection is uncommon but may occur through occupational or environmental exposure to infected animals, particularly during lambing or kidding seasons.

Diagnosis
The diagnosis of Chlamydia abortus infection is performed through molecular, serological, microbiological, and histopathological methods. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays are considered highly sensitive and specific and are widely used to detect bacterial DNA in placental tissues, fetal specimens, vaginal swabs, and other clinical samples. Serological testing, including ELISA and complement fixation assays, may be used to identify exposure and monitor herd infection status. Histopathological examination of placental tissue frequently reveals characteristic inflammatory lesions associated with infection. Laboratory diagnosis is particularly important in cases of abortion outbreaks among livestock and in suspected zoonotic infections involving pregnant women.

Symptoms
In sheep and goats, Chlamydia abortus infection most commonly causes late-term abortion, stillbirths, weak offspring, retained placenta, and reduced reproductive performance. Many infected animals remain asymptomatic until pregnancy, when placental infection leads to fetal loss. In humans, infection is rare but potentially severe, occurring primarily among pregnant women exposed to infected livestock or contaminated birthing materials. Human infection may present with fever, headache, muscle aches, malaise, and influenza-like symptoms but can rapidly progress to severe systemic illness. During pregnancy, Chlamydia abortus infection is associated with placentitis, miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, septicemia, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and multi-organ failure. Prompt recognition and treatment are essential because maternal and fetal complications can be life-threatening.
