background

Liver diseases such as liver cirrhosis, primary and metastatic liver cancers are still a major medical challenge. Syndecan-1 is one of the most important proteoglycans in the liver. Syndecan-1 is normally expressed on the surfaces of hepatocytes and cholangiocytes. Due to liver diseases the amount of syndecan-1 increases in the liver.

molecular weight

The protein has a predicted MW of 51 kDa. Due to glycosylation, the protein migrates to 85-110 kDa based on Tris-Bis PAGE result.

available size

100 µg, 500 µg

endotoxin

Less than 1EU per μg by the LAL method.

Protein family
Syndecan proteoglycan family

Function
Cell surface proteoglycan that contains both heparan sulfate and chondroitin sulfate and that links the cytoskeleton to the interstitial matrix (PubMed:8163535). Regulates exosome biogenesis in concert with SDCBP and PDCD6IP (By similarity). Able to induce its own expression in dental mesenchymal cells and also in the neighboring dental epithelial cells via an MSX1-mediated pathway (PubMed:8898217).
Subellular location
Membrane ; Single-pass type I membrane protein. Secreted. Secreted, extracellular exosome. Note=Shedding of the ectodomain produces a soluble form.
Structure
Interacts with CDCP1 (By similarity). Interacts (via C-terminus) with TIAM1 (via PDZ domain) (PubMed:20361982). Interacts with MDK (By similarity).
Post-translational modification
Shedding is enhanced by a number of factors such as heparanase, thrombin or EGF. Also by stress and wound healing. PMA-mediated shedding is inhibited by TIMP3.
