background

Insulin-like growth factor (IGF) binding protein 2 (IGFBP2) was discovered and identified as an IGF system regulator, controlling the distribution, function, and activity of IGFs in the pericellular space. IGFBP2 is a developmentally regulated gene that is highly expressed in embryonic and fetal tissues and markedly decreases after birth.IGFBP2 is upregulated and promotes several key oncogenic processes, such as epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, cellular migration, invasion, angiogenesis, stemness, transcriptional activation, and epigenetic programming via signaling that is often independent of IGFs.

molecular weight

The protein has a predicted MW of 30.6 kDa. Due to glycosylation, the protein migrates to 32-40 kDa based on Tris-Bis PAGE result.

Protein names
Insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 2 (IBP-2) (IGF-binding protein 2) (IGFBP-2) (mIGFBP-2)
Gene names
Igfbp2,Igfbp2 Igfbp-2
Mass
10090Da
Function
Inhibits IGF-mediated growth and developmental rates (By similarity). IGF-binding proteins prolong the half-life of the IGFs and have been shown to either inhibit or stimulate the growth promoting effects of the IGFs on cell culture. They alter the interaction of IGFs with their cell surface receptors.
Subellular location
Secreted.
Tissues
Highly expressed in adult liver, but also in kidney, lung, brain, spleen, testis and ovary.
Structure
Binds IGF2 more than IGF1.
Post-translational modification
O-glycosylated.
Domain
