background

Galectin 1(Gal-1), a β-galactoside binding mammalian lectin of 14KDa, is implicated in many signalling pathways, immune responses associated with cancer progression and immune disorders. Inhibition of human Gal-1 has been regarded as one of the potential therapeutic approaches for the treatment of cancer, as it plays a major role in tumour development and metastasis by modulating various biological functions viz. apoptosis, angiogenesis, migration, cell immune escape.

molecular weight

The protein has a predicted MW of 42 kDa. Due to glycosylation, the protein migrates to 45-52 kDa based on Tris-Bis PAGE result.

available size

100 µg, 500 µg

endotoxin

Less than 1EU per μg by the LAL method.

Protein names
Galectin-1 (Gal-1) (14 kDa lectin) (Beta-galactoside-binding lectin L-14-I) (Galaptin) (Lactose-binding lectin 1) (Lectin galactoside-binding soluble 1) (S-Lac lectin 1)
Gene names
Lgals1,Lgals1 Gbp
Mass
10090Da
Function
Lectin that binds beta-galactoside and a wide array of complex carbohydrates. Plays a role in regulating apoptosis, cell proliferation and cell differentiation. Inhibits CD45 protein phosphatase activity and therefore the dephosphorylation of Lyn kinase. Strong inducer of T-cell apoptosis.
Catalytic activity

Subellular location
Secreted, extracellular space, extracellular matrix. Cytoplasm. Secreted. Note=Can be secreted; the secretion is dependent on protein unfolding and facilitated by the cargo receptor TMED10; it results in protein translocation from the cytoplasm into the ERGIC (endoplasmic reticulum-Golgi intermediate compartment) followed by vesicle entry and secretion.
Structure
Homodimer. Binds LGALS3BP. Interacts with CD2, CD3, CD4, CD6, CD7, CD43, ALCAM and CD45. Interacts with laminin (via poly-N-acetyllactosamine). Interacts with SUSD2. Interacts with cargo receptor TMED10; the interaction mediates the translocation from the cytoplasm into the ERGIC (endoplasmic reticulum-Golgi intermediate compartment) and thereby secretion.
