Structure
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is an enveloped, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA retrovirus belonging to the genus Lentivirus within the family Retroviridae. Two major types, HIV-1 and HIV-2, infect humans, with HIV-1 accounting for the vast majority of infections worldwide. The viral particle contains two copies of its RNA genome enclosed within a conical capsid and surrounded by a lipid envelope containing the viral glycoproteins gp120 and gp41, which mediate attachment and entry into host cells. HIV primarily infects CD4-positive T lymphocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. Following infection, viral RNA is reverse transcribed into DNA and integrated into the host genome, establishing lifelong infection. Progressive depletion of CD4-positive T cells results in immune system dysfunction and increased susceptibility to opportunistic infections and malignancies.

Diagnosis

Symptoms
Human immunodeficiency virus infection progresses through several clinical stages. Advanced HIV infection, known as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), is characterized by severe immune suppression and the development of opportunistic diseases such as Pneumocystis pneumonia, tuberculosis, cryptococcal meningitis, cytomegalovirus infection, Kaposi's sarcoma, and other life-threatening conditions.
