Description
Virus that causes hantavirus disease, including hantavirus pulmonary syndrome and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome

Structure
Hantaviruses are enveloped, negative-sense, single-stranded RNA viruses belonging to the family Hantaviridae. The viral genome consists of three RNA segments designated small (S), medium (M), and large (L), which encode the nucleocapsid protein, envelope glycoproteins, and viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, respectively. Hantaviruses are maintained in nature through persistent infections of specific rodent, shrew, mole, or bat hosts, which serve as natural reservoirs. Human infection typically occurs through inhalation of aerosolized virus present in contaminated urine, feces, or saliva from infected animals. Different hantavirus species are associated with distinct clinical syndromes, including hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) in the Americas and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Europe and Asia. The viruses can cause severe vascular leakage and systemic disease with significant mortality.

Diagnosis
The diagnosis of hantavirus infection is performed through serological and molecular methods. Detection of hantavirus-specific IgM and IgG antibodies using ELISA, immunofluorescence assays, or immunoblot techniques is commonly used for laboratory confirmation. Molecular methods such as reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) can detect viral RNA in blood or tissue samples during the acute phase of infection and may be used for species identification. Clinical findings, exposure history, and characteristic laboratory abnormalities such as thrombocytopenia, elevated hematocrit, and abnormal renal function tests may support the diagnosis. Early laboratory confirmation is essential because severe disease can progress rapidly and require intensive supportive care.

Symptoms
Hantavirus infection typically begins with a nonspecific febrile illness characterized by fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and malaise. In hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, symptoms may rapidly progress to cough, shortness of breath, pulmonary edema, respiratory failure, and shock due to increased vascular permeability within the lungs. In hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, patients may develop fever, hypotension, bleeding manifestations, thrombocytopenia, acute kidney injury, and renal failure. Disease severity varies depending on the infecting hantavirus species, but severe infections are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Prompt recognition and supportive medical care are critical for improving patient outcomes.
