background

Galectin 1(Gal-1), a β-galactoside binding mammalian lectin of 14KDa, is implicated in many signalling pathways, immune responses associated with cancer progression and immune disorders. Inhibition of human Gal-1 has been regarded as one of the potential therapeutic approaches for the treatment of cancer, as it plays a major role in tumour development and metastasis by modulating various biological functions viz. apoptosis, angiogenesis, migration, cell immune escape.

molecular weight

The protein has a predicted MW of 41.9 kDa. Due to glycosylation, the protein migrates to 48-55 kDa based on Tris-Bis PAGE result.

available size

100 µg, 500 µg

endotoxin

Less than 1EU per μg by the LAL method.

Protein names
Galectin-1 (Gal-1) (14 kDa laminin-binding protein) (HLBP14) (14 kDa lectin) (Beta-galactoside-binding lectin L-14-I) (Galaptin) (HBL) (HPL) (Lactose-binding lectin 1) (Lectin galactoside-binding soluble 1) (Putative MAPK-activating protein PM12) (S-Lac lectin 1)
Gene names
LGALS1,LGALS1
Mass
9606Da
Function
Lectin that binds beta-galactoside and a wide array of complex carbohydrates. Plays a role in regulating apoptosis, cell proliferation and cell differentiation. Inhibits CD45 protein phosphatase activity and therefore the dephosphorylation of Lyn kinase. Strong inducer of T-cell apoptosis.
Catalytic activity
BINDING 45..49; /ligand="a beta-D-galactoside"; /ligand_id="ChEBI:CHEBI:28034"; BINDING 53; /ligand="a beta-D-galactoside"; /ligand_id="ChEBI:CHEBI:28034"; BINDING 62; /ligand="a beta-D-galactoside"; /ligand_id="ChEBI:CHEBI:28034"; BINDING 69..72; /ligand="a beta-D-galactoside"; /ligand_id="ChEBI:CHEBI:28034"
Subellular location
Secreted, extracellular space, extracellular matrix. Cytoplasm. Secreted. Note=Can be secreted; the secretion is dependent on protein unfolding and facilitated by the cargo receptor TMED10; it results in protein translocation from the cytoplasm into the ERGIC (endoplasmic reticulum-Golgi intermediate compartment) followed by vesicle entry and secretion.
Tissues
Expressed in placenta, maternal decidua and fetal membranes. Within placenta, expressed in trophoblasts, stromal cells, villous endothelium, syncytiotrophoblast apical membrane and villous stroma. Within fetal membranes, expressed in amnion, chorioamniotic mesenchyma and chorion (at protein level). Expressed in cardiac, smooth, and skeletal muscle, neurons, thymus, kidney and hematopoietic cells.
Structure
Homodimer. Binds LGALS3BP. Interacts with CD2, CD3, CD4, CD6, CD7, CD43, ALCAM and CD45. Interacts with laminin (via poly-N-acetyllactosamine). Interacts with SUSD2. Interacts with cargo receptor TMED10; the interaction mediates the translocation from the cytoplasm into the ERGIC (endoplasmic reticulum-Golgi intermediate compartment) and thereby secretion (PubMed:32272059).
