background | Microfibril-associated glycoprotein 4 (MFAP4) is an extracellular matrix protein belonging to the fibrinogen-related protein superfamily. MFAP4 is produced by vascular smooth muscle cells and is highly enriched in the blood vessels of the heart and lung, where it is thought to contribute to the structure and function of elastic fibers. Genetic studies in humans have implicated MFAP4 in the pathogenesis of Smith-Magenis syndrome, in which patients present with multiple congenital abnormalities and mental retardation, as well as in the severe cardiac malformation left-sided congenital heart disease. |
molecular weight | The protein has a predicted MW of 28.7 kDa. Due to glycosylation, the protein migrates to 35-40 kDa based on Tris-Bis PAGE result. |
available size | 100 µg, 500 µg |
endotoxin | Less than 1EU per μg by the LAL method. |

Protein names Microfibril-associated glycoprotein 4 |
Gene names Mfap4,Mfap4 |
Mass 10090Da |
Function Could be involved in calcium-dependent cell adhesion or intercellular interactions. May contribute to the elastic fiber assembly and/or maintenance. |
Subellular location Secreted, extracellular space, extracellular matrix . |
Structure Homodimer. Can also form higher oligomers. Interacts with FBN1, FBN2 and LOX. Interacts with COL1A1 in a Ca (2+)-dependent manner. Interacts with ELN in a Ca (2+)-dependent manner; this interaction promotes ELN self-assembly. |
