background

Pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) is an important antiangiogenic and antitumorigenic factor in a variety of cancer forms, including pancreatic cancer. PEDF is mainly secreted as a soluble monomeric glycoprotein. In human pancreatic cancer PEDF levels are decreased, both in the tissue and serum. The decrease is associated with increased tumor angiogenesis, fibrosis, inflammation, autophagy, occurrence of liver metastasis and worse prognosis.

molecular weight

The protein has a predicted MW of 45.4 kDa. Due to glycosylation, the protein migrates to 48-55 kDa based on Tris-Bis PAGE result.

Protein names
Pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) (Caspin) (Serpin F1) (Stromal cell-derived factor 3) (SDF-3)
Gene names
Serpinf1,Serpinf1 Pedf Sdf3
Protein family
Serpin family
Mass
10090Da
Function
Neurotrophic protein; induces extensive neuronal differentiation in retinoblastoma cells. Potent inhibitor of angiogenesis. As it does not undergo the S (stressed) to R (relaxed) conformational transition characteristic of active serpins, it exhibits no serine protease inhibitory activity.
Subellular location
Secreted. Melanosome .
Tissues
Highly expressed in the liver, gastric glandular mucosa and renal tubules. It is also expressed in the brain, heart, lung retina and testes.
Structure
Interacts with PNPLA2; this interaction stimulates the phospholipase A2 activity of PNPLA2.
