Structure and strains
Subunit structure: The ToRCH pathogens consist of different types of viruses and protozoa:
  • Toxoplasma gondii (protozoan) is a single-celled organism.
  • Rubella virus is an RNA virus from the Togaviridae family.
  • Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a DNA virus from the Herpesviridae family.
  • Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a DNA virus also from the Herpesviridae family
  • Detection and diagnosis
The ToRCH complex is studied in the context of congenital infections and pregnancy. Diagnostic assays, such as PCR and serology tests, are used to detect these infections. Vaccines for rubella and CMV are of particular interest in reducing congenital transmission.
