target relevance
BAFF binds to three TNF receptor superfamily members: B-cell maturation antigen (BCMA/TNFRSF17), transmembrane activator and calcium-modulator and cyclophilin ligand interactor (TACI/TNFRSF13B) and BAFF receptor (BAFF R/BR3/TNFRSF13C). These receptors are type III transmembrane proteins that lack a signal peptide. Whereas TACI and BCMA bind BAFF and another TNF superfamily ligand, APRIL (a proliferation-inducing ligand), BAFF R selectively binds BAFF.
Protein names
Tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily member 13C (B-cell-activating factor receptor) (BAFF receptor) (BAFF-R) (BLyS receptor 3) (CD antigen CD268)
Gene names
FUNCTION: B-cell receptor specific for TNFSF13B/TALL1/BAFF/BLyS. Promotes the survival of mature B-cells and the B-cell response. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:11591325, ECO:0000269|PubMed:12387744}.
Subellular location
SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Membrane {ECO:0000305}; Single-pass type III membrane protein {ECO:0000305}.
TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Highly expressed in spleen and lymph node, and in resting B-cells. Detected at lower levels in activated B-cells, resting CD4+ T-cells, in thymus and peripheral blood leukocytes.
